Dancing has been enjoyed by performers, choreographers and spectators alike for thousands of years. From the classic styles of dance, such as ballet, to newer modern dance, such as hip hop, dancing has served many different purposes including self expression, exercise, stress relief and entertainment. The stunning movements of any dancer are greatly enhanced by the dancewear fabrics, both in rehearsing and performing.
When warming up and rehearsing, wearing appropriate dancewear with the right type of fabrics and the right fit is vital to avoiding injury. Fabrics without enough stretch and flexibility not only limit movement, but can also cause pulled muscles and sprains. Also, loose clothing can cause dancers to trip causing a number of injuries. For warming up and casual dancewear, polar fleece, silk/cotton blend and cotton jersey fabrics are recommended. Silk knit jersey, nylon and polyester spandex, nylon mesh, and polyester stretch velvet allow the most movement and are recommended to avoid injury for more intense dance style rehearsals.
During performances, the chosen costumes play a vital role in the overall aesthetic quality of the performance. Different styles of dance all have specific styles of clothing to accentuate the rhythms of that particular dance style as well as match the theme and feel of the music. Many dance competitions have an entire section judged on costume selection.
Dance
costumes fabrics and colors, if properly chosen, will draw
attention to particular areas of the body or exaggerate the movements
of particular body parts. For example; in clogging and tap entire outfit
will be plain or blend in with the background, but the shoes will be
bright and flashy to emphasize the intricate footwork. In ballet, often
the color of the tights will match the color of the Pointe shoes to
make the legs appear longer making each movement that much more impressive.
The most important qualities to look for when choosing dancewear (this includes footwear) for both rehearsing and performances is strength, flexibility, breathability and, above all, comfort. Dancing is much more difficult and tiring if the apparel the dancer is wearing is heavy and gets in the way. The materials used must be lightweight and breathable.
Materials like Lycra, spandex, chiffon, nylon and lightweight cotton keep the dancers cool and are durable as well. Also check the stitching of the dancewear. The stitching should be able to stretch and there should be enough to hold everything together. No matter what the garment is made of, it won’t last long if the stitching is not done properly. Most importantly make sure you try the apparel on and make sure you feel great in it before you purchase.
Dance accessories also play an important role in the health, looks
and comfort of the dancer. Various accessories are designed to improve
the performance and looks of a dancer as well as add more convenience
and comfort to dancers while rehearsing. There are countless different
accessories available at online stores and local dance shops. Some are
simple used to enhance the beauty of a dancer, such as cute hair ties,
hair pins, or even human
hair wigs or clips.. Others, such as shoe insoles and knee
wraps, are vital to the health of certain dancers.
